"Nigel Cabourn has worked in the fashion industry for over forty years, but his clothing has little in common with most people’s concept of the word fashion. He is influenced not by trends but a longstanding passion for vintage clothing, fabric and details.

These elements have formed the basis for much of his output over the years and continue to be a vital part of his collection today.

Nigel Cabourn was a student at Northumbria University from 1967-1971 and he started his own label while still in his final year and against all advice stayed in the North of England, another source of inspiration over the years. This cold, windy location has certainly influenced him and he is known to be one of a few true outerwear specialists.

Nigel has collected vintage clothing for over 30 years and has an archive of over 4,000 pieces, including salvaged British Military uniforms and workwear and a trove of exploration garments unearthed from all corners of the globe. It is this ever increasing vintage collection that is the cornerstone of each collection, not a response to a particular trend or general demand. Each collection has a real story, sense of history and integrity underpinned by the highest level of quality.

Today the Cabourn team work and play in a converted gardener’s house at the bottom of his garden overlooking a cricket pitch and are the envy of everyone who visits them, especially when it’s summer and they’re working in the sunshine!"

"Inspired by a jacket worn by Wilfrid Noyce on an Everest expedition, the Cameraman jacket has an upper made of Mackintosh, and a lower made of Harris Tweed, to keep the wearer warm in extreme conditions. It features specially made metal clips, and waxed cord in the hood and hem."

Inventory Magazine is the new project from Ryan Willms, founder of the discontinued and highly rated h(y)r collective online magazine. Inventory is a continuance of h(y)r collective, but now also offers a hard copy issue. The quality of the work presented is irreproachable, and in addition to the hard copy, Inventory offers an online magazine, in addition to their online store (Inventory Stockroom) and blog (Inventory updates).

In June, we spent a day with Ryan in Paris, during the mens fashion week. We spent the day buying Visvim and Junya Watanabe MAN, and joined Ryan at Nigel Cabourn. As we are co-blogging with Blender Agency, some of our blog entries are almost the same. This one is such an entry. We went to Paris a few weeks ago, buying most of the Spring/Summer 2010 collections. The brand mix at for spring 2010 looks very exciting, as it will contain Elisabeth & James, Erin Wasson x RVCA, Bess, up and coming New York denim label R13 and jewelleries from Delfina Delettrez, in addition to Alexander Wang, Helmut Lang and Current Elliott. For the gents, we will carry Visvim, Junya Watanabe and Martin Margiela.

Secret Society is proud to be the exclusive dealer for a limited series of prints from 'Skull Study' (2008-2009), which is part of the larger series 'Evolution' by Norwegian photographic artist Christian Houge (www.christianhouge.no). The images have been handpicked by Secret Society in collaboration with Houge.

'Evolution" explores a reinterpretation of evolutionary study, through the lens of contemporary photography. Houge has drawn inspiration from the perfection through imperfection found in nature, in particular the fields of entomology and paleontology; the tedious systemizing and categorizing of species, fusing mystery, art and science. "Skull Study" is the latest series to be included in this project and is meant to create a cognitive dissonance to the viewer. We are reminded of our own structure as well as what we are slowly moving towards in life.

Christian Houge (1972-) has had solo exhibitions at galleries like Hosfelt New York and Scout Gallery in London, been exhibited at Paris Photo at the Louvre, and been sold through Sotheby's. The prints are digital C-prints on Diasec, 40cm*60cm, frames are polished and painted by hand. The series consists of four different images, each set at an edition of six (6), titled Untitled 1-4. While we were in New York, we met Peter and Flavio from Common Projects. Peter was wearing the Common Project x Moscot collaboration, and we must say we were quite amazed of how sturdy the frame seemed and how thorough the finish was. If you are going to buy one pair of wayfarer-ish sunglasses this summer, we suggest you buy Type One from Common Project x Moscot (more on Moscot below the pictures).

MOSCOT Eyewear and Eyecare Since 1915 has been a New York City institution for nearly 100 years. The MOSCOT optical roots were first planted by great grandfather, patriarch, Hyman Moscot, who arrived from Eastern Europe via Ellis Island in 1899 and began selling ready-made eyeglasses from a pushcart on Orchard Street on Manhattan’s famed Lower East Side. In 1915, having establishing himself in the neighborhood as the “go-to” guy for glasses, Hyman opened what would become MOSCOT’s first retail space at 94 Rivington Street.

Hyman’s son, Sol, began helping his father in the store as a young boy. This would mark the beginning of Sol’s passion for people and opticianry. Sol’s expertise developed quickly and he soon took over the family business and Sol Moscot Opticians, as it was known then, was officially established.

From its original location on Rivington Street, the business changed locations until 1951 when it settled at 118 Orchard Street on the corner of Delancey Street, where the retail store and the MOSCOT Museum remain today. (Bio from Moscot.com)

We got familiar with Moscot last year, when Scott Morrison and the peeps at Earnest Sewn created a Moscot pop-up store inside the Earnest Sewn store at 821 Washington Street, NYC. The Moscot pop-up store was in good company, as other projects at the ESW store have included the likes of Repetto, Malin+Goetz, Trovata and Rogues Gallery.

The Common Project x Moscot collaboration will be available in July.

Peter Francis Pracilio is born in New York and raised in Chicago, Pracilio's family and surroundings have instilled art as a part of his life from the very beginning. Feeling the desire to not necessarily find a path, but to forge his own from life lessons and experiences, Pracilio traveled throughout America, Believing that the natural surroundings would further inspire the ability to create, Pracilio worked with every artistic medium that fell in front of him, such as paint, pre-cast concrete, and glass. Pracilio decided to return to his hometown of NYC, to advance his successes and further cultivate his natural talents and ideas by attending The Pratt Institute and refining his abilities in the Industrial Design department. With influences on furniture, fine art, interiors, film, product design and lighting. Pracilio has worked with such firms as Make Product Development, Cake LLC, Mark Goetz, Acme World Zoo and Ethical Products. To identify opportunity designGO! was launched by Peter Pracilio in early 2007.

Victoria's Secret yearly show, is probably the most sought after runway show in the world. One might suspect it is because of hot ladies like Adriana Lima, or maybe artists like Usher performing live while the birds are showing of the latest undressable underwear. Anyhow, this show sets the standard for the term sexy (look up sexy in Oxford English Dictionary, and I bet it says "Victoria's Secret is synonymous with sexy"), and it brought smiles to our faces, when we took a second glimpse at the bird's shoes (as you can imagine, that is really hard).

Secret Society is proud to be stocking products from one of the true original american work wear brands, shoes from the classic work boot maker Red Wing. Since 1905, Red Wing have been producing shoes of the highest quality, from its factory in Red Wing, Minnesota. The classic style 877 (top picture) was introduced in the collection in 1950, and as the boot was intended as a hunting boot, it got its color (the distinct "Red Wing" red) and nick name from the classic upland bird dog; The Irish Setter.

As Red Wing describes it "All work and no play tend to make dull boys. So Red Wing leveraged its work boot heritage to create a boot for play. In this case, play was upland game hunting. Designed for comfortably walking the prairie grasses and fields, its durability would last season after season. For over 50 years the 877 has been a legend in the field."

We are stocking the classic 877 and style 2975 (11" Engineer). And since these shoes works just as well for the girlfriend, as it does for the boyfriend, we have got both men's and women's sizes.

The following text and image are from Klein Dytham architecture for their design of the Under Cover Lab in Tokyo, Japan.

Under Cover Lab is a design studio for one of the Japan´s leading fashion designer, Jun Takahasi of Under Cover. The building itself is very undercover, not only tucked away in the back streets of Harajuku in Tokyo, but the site is also very deceiving. A narrow but long driveway leads to a 12m x 12m site at the rear.

Arne & Carlos is back. Let's call it a re-positioning, and it seems to be a successful one. When we met the two of them at Rendez-Vous in Paris earlier this year, their sales stand had been invaded by a bunch of the top-notch stores in the world. The buyers from the best Japanses stores we're stunned by their collection, and when the buyers from Dover Street Market ask to sit down, I guess you have done something the proper way.

As the cat is out of the bag, we can reveleave that Rei Kawakubo of Comme Des Garcons fell in love with the collection, and have commissioned an exclusive collection (Arne & Carlos for Comme Des Garcons), which will be on sale in all Comme Des Garcons boutiques by the end of October. Impressive. Look out for a write up on Arne & Carlos in the coming issue of Monocle.

We have got the regular collection in stock, and that means the better part of the products pictured above.

Current Elliott is the denim brand of the moment. Secret Society is among the first stores that stock the brand world wide, along with amongst others, Ron Herman in LA. The LA stores are having trouble keeping the denim in stock, and Vogue described it as "...the most refreshing denim line to come out of LA's jeans scene in a long, long time", in it's July issue (see below for the Vogue article).

For the moment, we stock The Elephant Bell (below) and The Skinny (above). We will receive a new shipment in November, with The Skinny in black.

We have received the first shipment of Visvim for the new season, and it's no other shoe than the amazing FBT Shaman - Folk. This is close to Visvim's greatest shoe ever, and could it be the best moccasin ever made?

In addition to the FBT Shaman - Folk, we have received the original FBT from G-Line, (below) in yellow, red and blue, as well as the G Kiefer Hi Nez Perce (bottom).

In addition to the shoes, we have for the first time received clothes from Visvim, in the shape of the G. Record Jacket (blue), and the G. Saga Chino (red and yellow). The Visvim clothing line is a great addition to the Visvim range, and like the shoes, the clothing line is of premium quality and fitting.

"Born in Liege, Belgium, Natalia Brilli studied at the prestigious Cambre school in Brussels. After a short summer vacation, Secret Society is now back on track, and we are looking forward to an intriguing season, with really strong collections from our brands. In addition to our current brands, we have decided to try out a few new ones. Our long time favourite Helmut Lang will now be sold at Secret Society, alongside our Norwegian favourites Arne & Carlos (watch out for these guys in the coming years). From LA we have found a great new denim brand for the birds, called Current / Elliot, in addition to up & coming ready-to-wear starlet Vince. Finally, we will be carrying a great accessories line from Belgium born Natalia Brilli. More detailed information on our new lines, will be presented in the coming days.

'My Own Private Portland'

Portland's Ace Hotel forms the latest inspiration for Japanese brand Number (N)ine's 2008 Fall collection. In a movement made popular by the likes of Kurt Cobain through the Northwestern corridor, this collection designed by Takahiro Miyashita possess a distinct grunge tone.

The runway show titled "My Own Private Portland" commenced with a voicemail message and made-in Portland Pendleton wool blankets for guests. The blankets emblazoned with imagery of the iconic and historical significant Thompson elk statute represent a throw back to America's past as well as a good showing of direction for this collection.

For Miyashita, the inclusion of Ace Hotel in his inspiration signified his desire to shed light on Portland in a real and authentic manner, one that showcases the luxurious, albeit in an irregular manner which remembers the past. The blankets will be available for sale through Number (N)ine's Manhattan location as well as a soon to be opened Ace outpost in New York.

Car Couture

Every now and then, we get amazed by projects emerging from a brand extension perspective. Intersection magazine commissioned six fashion designers to create couture car covers. Both Visvim and Maison Martin Margiela have contributed, our friends at Ksubi likewise, in addition to Richard James, Adam Kimmel and Bless.

Hiroki Nakamura and Visvim's contribution is made up of traditional American-style hand-quilting patterns, welded to Gore-Tex. Pure Visvim magic this one.

Visvim are releasing a brand new line this year; Folk series.

Honeyee have made an interesting interview with Visvim founder Hiroki Nakamura. Recommended reading if you like Visvim, or the idea of focusing on a great product, in preference to branding and the marketing game.

We haven't got any info regarding the Folk series beyond what you can read in the interview, and we don't know if the line will be available in Europe. Visvim are restructering their business, and the collection known as G-Line (Global Line, up until now available only in the US), will be available in Europe for the next season. The original Visvim line, will from now be available only in Japan (as far as we know). The good thing is that more stores will get the chance to sell the clothes from G-Line, and in addition, the look of the G-Line will be closer to that of the original Visvim line.

We have received a two new styles from Visvim this month, the Decoy Duck Boot Hi and Kiefer-Hi Nez Perce ／Nome.
